1949 Lincoln Cosmopolitan Sport 4dr Lucille

Post by My_49_Lucille »

Hello group,
My name is Ivan and I am the proud owner of a 1949 Cosmopolitan Sport, "Lucille"

I saved her from a home that was not taking care of her responsibly. It is a complete car, very few if no parts are missing. That being said I cannot trust the mechanical history of the car and am therefore assuming everything I touch is 70+ years old. This includes the original wiring, most of which is aluminum and wrapped in a cotton sleeve?
I am looking forward to your guidance and input as I restore every segment of this car. I plan on doing it myself as I have experience in modern restorations and dumb enough to try ..lol
I plan on keeping the original 6V system, although I already noticed it was switched to a negative ground system. I have resources that will benefit this group, for instance I noticed I have the dealer repair guides for this vehicle. These books are over 950 pages of detailed information, part blow ups, and part numbers that many will find helpful I'm sure. I'm willing to look things up for you and send you PDF's of the scanned page(s).

This car is the coolest thing I have ever owned, even better than my previous 59 impala with an original 348 Tri Power.

So here is the information I have on my car and also the index of forum pages that will refer you to the proper section, as I feel this is going to get really lengthy, lol

Welcome!!

If you are interested, Schumacker in Belgium makes a 12 volt jump box. Not cheap, but they'll ship it to you in the US. I bought one for my 6v cars.

Good luck with the resto and keep posting pictures!

What do you mean by a jump box? When I'm not running it to keep it alive, I have it connected to a smart trickle charger that provides a 6V charging option.

In addition I have read somewhere that I can use my 12V lithium battery pack to jump start the vehicle if necessary.

Thank you

In case you haven't invested already, for 2023 I suggest you all buy stock in WD-40. LOL
This old lady drank an entire bottle today. In return I got three of the four windows to roll up/down and the rear quarter windows to open.
I will say, that the hydraulic rams move the windows as fast if not faster than modern electric windows.

See my answers in the Body, trim and interiors section.

WD 40 is not a good subst9itute for a good penetrating oil or a good lubricating oil.

Well struck gold today,

I have sourced/ bought a rust free front cap. Hood, LS/RS fenders. Or better said a front cap in much better shape than the one I currently have ... Once I have it in hand I will update the group with pics.

The jump box I'm referring to is the 6V version of the lithium battery pack you have. While you can us a 12V battery pack to jump a 6V system, you have to be very careful. If you don't remove the cable as soon as the car turns over, you run the risk of blowing out the system since you are putting 12V into a 6V system.

It's just a safer (but costlier) option.

Thank you for the link Stuart. A higher investment in proper tech today will save someone a costlier repair tomorrow, or has been my experience ..

When you use a 12 volt battery pack to jump start a 6 volt car, you should connect the battery cable directly to the cable going to the starter and touch the grounding cable from the battery pack to the engine or another convenient grounding spot. The starter will turn as soon as you touch the grounding cable to ground. Have an assistant in the drivers seat to operate the ignition switch and gas pedal. The starter button or start position on the ignition switch should not be used, if they are used, you could direct 12 volts to other circuits in the car.

I use this procedure when ever I can when jumping a 12 Volt car as well. It has the advantage of not allowing a dead battery to suck all of the charge out of the jump starter pack and giving all of the juice to the starter. The disadvantage is that you will not supply voltage to the coil. This is not a big deal as most batteries have enough charge for the ignition system.

Well good news !! I was able to source an entire front cap for this old girl. Supposedly rust free hood and DS/PS fenders .. I can't wait ...
Here are the before, they were pretty bad up close and would have cost me a fortune to repair properly. Now I will have very large canvases to improve my painting skills on .. lol

Yep, gotta agree that locating and then obtaining those body parts was a real score on your part. Going the total replacement route for those body sections shown in the photos was definitely the best formula for Lucille. Good job.

I plan on photographing and video taping the replacement. Never thought I would be using my 5 ton A Frame to remove a hood .. lol

Will also make a great time to rebuild my carburetor as I will be 3ft closer to the carb on either side .. lol
