I still have the promotional model of a 1961 Ford Galaxie that my Uncle gave me when I was about 12 yrs old. I recall it having "Adjusts it's own brakes automatically" molded into the underside of the model.
I do not know the exact procedure but I think it involves backing up and applying the brakes several times.
But does the Lincoln have self adjusting brakes?
Since I have yet to do any work on my car's brakes, I don't know - although I have found nothing suggesting that it does. You would think that the Lincoln would have it before the Ford, but for whatever reason - maybe not.

Thunderbird had self adjusting brakes in 1961.

Re: Self Adjusting Brakes on 1961 Lincoln Continental?
Thanks Dan.
My brake pedal seemed to be lower than it should be when applying the brakes, so I thought that maybe if the brakes were adjusted correctly, the pedal would be a little higher when applying the brakes.
I did try to backup several times and apply the brakes, and it did seem that the pedal is a little higher - although not at the optimum height (my opinion). So, I was wondering if it was my imagination, or did I self adjust the brakes a little.

Re: Self Adjusting Brakes on 1961 Lincoln Continental?
pumping the brakes, while reversing, will adjust them, as long as the linkage inside the drums is in order. Old brake fluid will make them feel soggy, it may be an idea to have the fluid flushed and bled, if it is old. I think todays fluid is longer lasting than it was just a few years ago.
'61 Lincoln and T Bird have identical brakes.

The adjusters can seize over time or in my case some of the self adjuster parts are missing all together so it might be worth pulling the drums off to see what's going on if it hasn't been apart in a while.

Are the self adjusters only on the rear wheels, or on all four wheels?
Thanks,
Bill
