Kick-down rod falls

Post by norgale »

The kick down rod on my 81 Mk6 fell off the carb linkage and I didn't know it. I tried to drive the car like that and ended up having it towed back to the house. Question is how much damage could I have done to the tranny which now makes funny metallic noises even with the rod back in place? Should I get the tranny rebuilt or get a used one and have it installed? How much is average for a used transmission and what would the garage charge to remove the old one and install the used one? I have had no experience with transmissions at all. never had a bad one. Any advice would be appreciated. Pete

You might start with changing out the fluid and filter.

Not likely there was much damage depends on how long the condition exists.
The kick down circuit is normally not active.
It is activated when the accelerator pedal is nearly to the floor and beyond.
Which the transmission down shifts to a lower gear or to first.

If the kick down was always engaged it would be difficult for the transmission to upshift. Driving around in first gear gets rather loud the faster the vehicle is accelerated.
And could generate some heat. Heat is the enemy of transmission fluid. After longer period of heat the fluid thins out and no longer does it's job.

Change out the fluid. And the filter too.
Gives an opportunity to inspect as well.
What color is the fluid?
What does the fluid smell like?
