You are much better off running the car when you use any power accessories. Especially the top. There are lots of relays and switches and solenoids in the top operation that need a constant and consistent energy flow.

If you are going to run the top or anything else you should have the battery at least hooked up to a battery tender if not a battery charger.

If the battery is good and it's fully charged you should be able to put the top up or down but if you are going to be playing around with it start the car or put a big charger on it. A battery tender won't do anything. You might even damage the battery tender if you are trying to use it to over come a load like that.

I ran my 65 top up and down with the battery 4 times one day without a problem. Just showing the car to some people. And when you show the car, its not complete without the top going up and down which is somewhat of a show stopper.

To run the top pump does the lines go to the engine bay and hook into the power steering pump or no.

I'm no expert on 61's but that pump should have it's own reservoir. It has nothing to do with, nor is it hooked into the power steering pump that I know about.

No

Top has it's own pump and reservoir.

Back then the original fluid was brake fluid.
Most of them have been converted to transmission fluid.

Any of those fluids will be acceptable. Mixing fluids will not be acceptable.

I would get a small syringe type thing (smaller than a Turkey baster) and suck out some fluid from the pump. There is a screw plug on the end. If the fluid is pretty clear it is probably the original brake fluid. If it is pink it is probably Type F Trans fluid. Don't mix them!

Help me out here folks. I am not a '61 expert. I have a 66. Is there a top up relay to jump behind the rear seat back in a 61? I would think so.

If it is like a '63, you have to remove a bolt from each rear wheel well, lift the deck lid enough to reach in and manually unscrew the deck locks.
