Which flexplate?

Post by jame04 »

I have a 71 460 engine (D1VE A2B) in my 68 lincoln and assuming a 71 C6 trans. They were bolted together and running fine, but after pulling the engine I can no longer find the flexplate and need a new one, which one? This is not a high HP/TQ engine. Assume I need an internally balanced flexplate?

This is a new aftermarket part

Not sure which Lincoln you have or the donor engine came from, and the engine transmission for both the Continental Mark III and Lincoln Continental should be the same.

Additional question. I remember there being a thin metal spacer between the trans bellhousing and the engine, almost like a gasket. Was it a spacer, shield? Is it needed and if so where would I locate one? My shop manual doesn't show one but my manual has very little diagrams.

I forgot to look at the Master Parts Cat. (My life is very full at the moment) Between all the things going on and my memory I will do my best. Or maybe some one else can supply an application.

I guess I mess up on the link. See above.

LM has parts books.
There is an illustration book with pictures if you do not know the basic part number.
Then there is a text book. This arranges the part numbers so they can be looked up.
These "books" are called the Master Parts Catalogs. For LM the years would be batched from 1965 to 1972.

Once you have a full part number you can see the application. As a guess the application for the flex plate that you seek may fit all Lincolns with 460 from 1968 to ???. And may fit Ford and Mercury models.

The 460 engine was exclusive to Lincoln until the end of model year 1971.
In model year 1972 the 460 engine became available to Ford and Mercury products.
In addition, for model years prior to 1972, Ford and Mercury had 429. Essentially the same engine. Your flex plate may apply to 429 engines. If so that opens up a very big universe.

The link above is to make a donation to this website and you will get access to the MPC. I do not know exactly how it works as I bought a pdf online before I joined here. However I find the MPC to be very handy when I am looking for a part. Because if I find the part has a Ford application, I can then search for that.

Another thought comes to mind. And that is Mustang. Mustangs of the period would have a 429. And you can buy anything for a Mustang. If your flex plate has Mustang applications then it is a piece of cake.

I would look up the part, however I am at work and do not have access to the MPC here. When I am at home, I am remodeling a bathroom. It is chaos at home.

I am at home now

I believe the basic part number is 6375

For all '68 to '72 - 429 and 460 engines with automatic transmission
D1SZ 6375 A

14 1/4 inches in diameter

Action, He is asking about a thin metal spacer between the bell housing and the engine. The part number you posted was for the flex plate... Here is the Google search for the part number you posted... https://www.google.com/search?source=hp ... CAk&uact=5

Correct, I am now in search of the thin spacer. Which I believe the general part number is 7007. This comes up at summit https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fms-m-7007-a

-7007- is an inspection cover or plate

Covers a hole that allows draining the fluid out of the torque converter.
Called in the MPC a engine rear cover plate

C9AZ 7007 B

There is a 6A366 or a flywheel reinforcing plate
B9AZ 6A366 B
1968 to 1972 429 and 460 for Lincoln Mercury
1966 to 1972 428, 429 and 460 with automatic for Ford

This piece assembles to the rear of the crankshaft on this order
Crank shaft -6303-
Flex plate -6375-
This plate -6A366-
Bolted in with six bolts

Is that what you mean?

If I knew how to attach an image I would show you the part. Sec 60 and page 18 of the 65-72 LM Illustration PDF. It looks' almost identical to this, but this part says for C4 transmissions.

You made a good reference as I have the same.

That -7007- Is the plate and cover. Just like the Summit link.
All FLM engines have that -7007- part. Has the removable inspection cover as well with two bolts

And I gave you the wrong number. The number I gave you was pulled from a Ford MPC and that number is for manual transmission.
(Yes you can get a 429 with a stick in a Torino)

68 to 72 Lincoln (either model) with C-6 Automatic and 460
Full sized Mercury from 69 to 72 with 429 an C-6 (71 & 752 all engines)
Comet for 1972 with 400 or 429 and C-6
1968 to 1972 Thunderbird with 429 and automatic
1971 full sized Ford, Torino & Mustang with 400 or 429 and C-6

Are a D1AZ 7007 A
