1977 Lincoln
No 3 Lincoln arrived some weeks ago.
Bought it last winter before Christmas.
It went to a workshop in Ashburn Virginia to make some check.
Nice workshop. Good service.
Picked it up last Tuesday with my daughter age 20 and her Knitting. (The knitting emote makes the error thing come on).
And drove it home. 3 hours trip.
It needed a new battery.
And started right up.
Went for a spin. The engine did stop some time on low rpm.
Was a bit worried if I should drive it home.
Lots of small hills and traffics lights. Did not won’t to hang in some traffic light with a stopped engine.
But after some “New” gasoline we went for it.
Rough idle at start but it did get better.
Had a great trip with the car. Pure joy. Flooding down the highway.
The first two photos are from the add.
Rest is in Denmark.
Would like to keep it original.
One owner. Bought it from the son.
Have almost every paper on it.
Had to make a Marty report.
One of 336 with the paint/trim code.
Interior looks just great.
Will get a prof polish in 2 weeks time.
The paint is a bit dull at the movement. Locking forward for it.
Roof has some “growing” underneath. I guess that it has to come of in the future. Perhaps SMS Fabrics has some material.
Were do I find info on correct materials and colour schema?
I have the dealer book for the 1979 Lincoln with codes and sample. Is it the same codes for the 1977 Lincoln?
Weather strips 1977 Lincoln Continental? Were to get that? The one on the driver door is a bit worn in the corner.
The safety belt lock system dos lock the belt a bit fast. Difficult to get the belt out. Any solution to solve the problem?
The all door lock system from the drivers door dos not work. One can lock the driver door and the rear doors from the switch in the driver door. But not the passenger front door. Any solution on the problem?
Cabin lights in the rear pillar dos not work.
A bit shaking on hard breaking. Need to dismantle the breaks. Did feel like the front breaks were hanging a bit in the start.
A bit shaking when hitting bad road surface with the rear wheels or axle. Special the right. Guess the shock absorber has gone. And the spring is the absorbing part.
The bonnet has a grey colour on the inside were the insulation has been fitted. Looks like it has been sprayed and replaced.
Guess it has some old Michelin tyres. Don’t know how old. But it’s a bit wobbling on the highway.
Otherwise a great car. Pure joy.
Regards.

Re: 1977 Lincoln
Great find! I love the sedans. I'm still learning a lot about these old beasts, but as for the weatherstrip, good luck. Mine (all around) is pretty old and dried out. If it hasn't fallen apart yet, you have a few options.
This is what I've found and I'm trying the least invasive technique first:
Some guys on this forum use a simple rubber refurbisher (wd 40 makes a spray can). There are many different brands.
Others have said they soak them in atf for a day or so (could risk ruining weatherstrip)
One good tip I read, since you said only a corner is worn, is to get a small peice of rubber hose and insert it into the hollow weatherstrip to push it back out.
I hope that helps. I havent been able to find any replacements anywhere so if you do, please update us!

Re: 1977 Lincoln
I am a bit excited about how the quality of the paint will be after it has been polished.
As for the weatherstrip.... Yeah. I have notice that.
But some have them. But they almost cost there weight in gold.
Perhaps someone could do some reproduction of them to a normal price?
It’s just rubber and some steel and moulding....
Regards.

A lower price would require reproducing any part in the thousands if not tens of thousands.
Most reproduction parts are done in the hundreds by some one taking the risk that there will be enough sales to buy the entire limited production run of any part. Because of low production of these types of parts, it costs a lot per item to sell. A 1977 Lincoln would have many parts that work for 1973 to 1979.
I don't know exact sales numbers but if Lincoln sold 30,000 units in 6 years or 90,000 units. That would have been the number sold of Mustangs in one bad year during that time period. Or a half a year sales of Mustangs for that time period.
The cost of reproducing parts has a lot to do with how many can be sold. That is why a weather strip for one door may cost $200 for a Lincoln and far less for a pony car.
I am just thank for a reproduction part is even available!!

Re: 1977 Lincoln
I just notice that 900 usd for some rubber parts plus was a bit over the hill.
I know that it dos cost to make the mouldings.
But that is life.
And then you can take out all the cars which are stripped for parts, since there are no reproduction for some parts.
I got this email from a supplier some weeks ago.
Good Morning,
Thank you for contacting Steele Rubber! I see you are looking for parts for 1970-1979 Lincoln. We are in the process of adding Lincoln parts now, we are about 6 months to a year out making molds from originals to add to our inventory. Here lately, we have added many parts for Lincolns. I am unsure of the specific year, make and model of your vehicle, can you provide me with that information? If you can then every time we add parts for this model we will send out an email to you letting you know what we have added to our inventory.
If I can assist you further, please do not hesitate to contact me. You may reach me at 1-800-544-8665 Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm Eastern Standard Time. I am happy to help.
Thank you,

PS. I need the same rubber parts for my 3 Lincoln’s. And I guess that there are many out there in need of them.
But won’t change as the old one still dos the job. Despite of its a bit worn out.

Re: 1977 Lincoln
Each time I come across a part for our cars that I find the price to be outrageous, I am reminded of something Dan has said in the past....Expensive is better than unavailable.

Re: 1977 Lincoln
I agree with this because I have attempted to make parts that were unavailable. I suck at that.

Re: 1977 Lincoln
She do look good again. And no parking lots dents.
But looks like there are some issue growing under the roof material.
Any one has tried to replace the roof material in a town car with original sunroof?
I guess that everything under the roof on the inside has to come down.
Regards.

Re: 1977 Lincoln
Are you referring to the landau roof material on the outside of the car or to the "headliner" material in the inside of the car?

Re: 1977 Lincoln
I still plan on taking mine to a local shop for the vinyl after ordering from SMS fabrics. I have watched a lot of videos of professionals replacing theirs, but these Lincoln's seem a little more elaborate on how they held their vinyl down. With your full Landau top and sunroof, it will most likely just make it more difficult.hagbartd wrote:The roof material on the outside.

I do know that most upper, interior trim needs to get removed to remove the weatherstrip track to remove the upper window trim which holds in part of the vinyl.
