1977 Continental Wet Sand and Buff.

Post by chazman »

Over it's 39 years, virtually every panel of my Lincoln has been repainted, either through fender benders, paint failure, etc.

Some of the panels are just awful. Looking like a crackhead applied the paint with a dead chicken. After claying and buffing, I just wasn't happy with the finish and decided to start wet sanding. There's alot of real estate on this car, so I'm doing it in stages. Last week I wet sanded and buffed the passenger side fender and doors. So much better after 5 hours of work. This was tough old paint. I had to get pretty aggressive with my technique.

Here's some pics.

Looking GOOD red and maroon are the hardest colors to bring back, I did a Maroon Mark V a few years ago, if you look up the thread " Look at what I found " you can see the before and after pictures..

Nice job on your Mark!

One of my favorite things is trying to bring back neglected or needy cars. Whenever I see an original car with faded paint I see the potential. 8)

Also on my "to do" is to get rid of those SUV tires for a proper set of white walls.

I wish I knew someone who could use the current tires as they only have a few hundred miles on them.

Took a half day off yesterday and spent it wet sanding and buffing the driver's side doors and quarter panel on the Lincoln. Tough old paint. I learned my lesson on the other side so I went in more aggressively from the get-go.

BTW, I'm trying to find some touch up paint. My paint code is 2GTW, but none of the touch up paint companies recognize it. Anyone have any tips?

chaz, does your car have lettered tires on one side and WWs on the other or did you replace tires between buffing sessions?

I think this is the first time I have seen non-factory-style tires on a car that I actually liked. The lettering looks great with those hubcaps.

What grit did you use? 600? 1000? 1500? Use any rubbing compound after or during?

It looks great. I think I need to use the same technique on my 66 to bring the shine back. I could practice on my 75 Lincoln parts car, Rusty, which looks nearly the same.

I replaced the RWL SUV tires with Hankook whitewalls between sessions.

As I mentioned, I learned on the passenger side that I needed to be a bit more aggressive with this old paint. I started with 1000 grit paper, then 1500 then 2000. I think I did the 2000 a couple times. I then buffed with a Griot's orange pad. I usually use Megs 105 followed by 205. But this paint required something more aggressive to start with. So after some trial and error with what I had handy on my shelf, I buffed with Megs ScratchX, and then the 105/205 combo.

When done, use the wax of your choice.

Dan, if you were local, I'd tell you to swing by with your car and we'd have a look....
