Got bored, installed new window belt weatherstripping.
So the joke with my family/friends is don't let me get bored or I find things to do. Ordered new window belt weather stripping and promised the wife I'd save this non-critical update for a day I'm off in the summer so I don't get bored. That lasted about 12 hours.
My window belt weather stripping was totally crumbly and disintegrated. Tore the doors apart and started replacing them. Two down two to go.
If anyone is interested, you have to remove the door card, remove the lower limiting bracket for the window so you can roll the window down below the surface to access all the screws in the trim.

Pat,
I did this last month to one window and it made it harder to roll up the window. So I have not done this to the others yet. Did you notice this problem? What do you think I did incorrectly?

I've run into the same problem with Frankenstein's rear windows when I did that same surgery. They are really sluggish when they move. That's something I have to address when I get home.

Who was the source of your belt molding? John Cashman says that everything everyone sells is wrong and a poor fit. It just slows the windows down because it is too hard.

Eeyup. It's not factory. It's a kludge someone found that is "good enough" to fit.
After a few window raises and lowers, it will crack and break off if the window contacts it at all. Just wait. This is what happened to Doug's when I installed it. We even trimmed it back so it wouldn't interfere as much. Junk.
I need to replace mine, but I plan on going with some kind of whiskers instead. It's just there to reduce debris into the door and for appearance.

But mine look pretty, if impractical. Maybe I can just coat the windows with 10W-40, that might smooth out their operation.

Good luck with that. You'll be accused of mis-installing them, etc.burnski wrote:if that happens ill be expecting my money back from them.
Take pictures of your installation and document everything.

I bought mine from rubber the right way and it is of good quality and fit but is a snug fit. Looks good too. I prefer a fast and easy moving window though.

Re: Got bored, installed new window belt weatherstripping.
It took a bit more than a few raises and lowers for mine, but eventually it did break. After replacing it twice, I found NOS moldings, with the weatherstrip already attached, for all four doors. I was anxious to put them on, and didn't take time to see if there was an adjustment for the windows to be moved inward slightly. On three of the doors the window frame rubs on the weatherstrip and has broken it. The rear drivers window doesn't touch the weatherstrip and that one is still perfect. I still haven't bothered to see if the windows can be adjusted inward, but if they can, that's what I would recommend.Dan Szwarc wrote:After a few window raises and lowers, it will crack and break off if the window contacts it at all. Yes. The windows can be adjusted inward and outward, to prevent hard rubbing against the weatherstripping.linc64 wrote: I still haven't bothered to see if the windows can be adjusted inward, but if they can, that's what I would recommend.
The window adjustment section of the MM shows the points that achieve this.

Thanks for confirming that Steven. I think mine can be saved if I can get the windows properly adjusted.
