The 1962 Lincoln Continental Project
I'd like to introduce myself. I'm Jesse from Liberty Lake, Wa. I've been hanging around this Forum as a guest for awhile and finally got signed up the other day. I've learned a lot by reading on here already and i look forward to sharing my project and asking questions here during the process. So hello everyone. Nice to be here. Also the car is being restored by Lethal Customs in Sprague, Washington.
Here is the photo of the cars I bought. I purchased both cars for $1000 with an agreement that the guy I bought them from in Sprague, Wa Will do the restoration for me. These cars need a lot of work but the green/grey car is pretty much rust free and ready to be restored. This is the original Craigslist ad
I'll be using the hood and trunk lid from the white car as they are much more rust free. The car will be stripped starting in June for rust repair and body work. There will need to be some floor board repair, a few minor spots on the body that need attention and the battery box needs some help. The car will be painted satin black, the bumpers and front grill will also be powder coated to match also satin black. I plan on keeping all the rest of the chrome on the car. The door handles and the locksets will be shaved during the body work process. A few more pictures from my 1st visit to see the cars.

dont shave the handles.. the suicide nature of these are one of the strongest design icons of the vehicle.
take away the door handles, and suddenly when the doors are closed it makes the car seem like every other large 4 door car of the age
big mistake if you ask me

Re: The 1962 Lincoln Continental Project
I wonder if i could get the best of both worlds by leaving the door handles and installing door poppers? I've gone back and forth many times on weather to do it or not. I do like the stock look and the handles break up an otherwise very long straight side of the car. I'm gonna have to do some more research and make my decision sometime this week. The body work will start soon. Thanks for the input.lincolnfanatic4life wrote:dont shave the handles.. the suicide nature of these are one of the strongest design icons of the vehicle.

Engine Delivery to my buddies house. Let the fun begin.....
This is the engine we will tear apart first since it's free spinning and the other seems to be seized up.
Can you say rusty??

Re: The 1962 Lincoln Continental Project
Welcome Jesse. $1000 for two '62? What a great deal.
Are you sure you want to have someone else do all the restoration work? My advice is to let the specialists do the body work and paint but do the rest of it yourself. It's fun (most of the time), you get to know the car inside and out, you get to meet new people and you save a ton of cash.
Oh, tell your friend to remove and not replace the two small thermostats behind the water pump.
cheers,
Reijer

Re: The 1962 Lincoln Continental Project
Actually Reijer, why not recommend he paints the car himself? The silver colored car appears to be razor straight, this would be a good easy paint job. A color change would be an idea for farming out. If you are parting out either of these cars there are people on here who need a good trunk lid.

Americans can still paint a car themselves despite all the environmental rules and regulations? In The Netherlands I think they would lock me up if I even hinted at it.

Re: The 1962 Lincoln Continental Project
Jesse, welcome to the forum and good luck with your project. I hope you are ready for the challenge as that car will need everything rebuilt or refurbished and you will need a boat load of cash to complete the project unless you plan on doing a good deal of the work yourself. I do not mean to scare you, but just to set your expectations right and let you know you have a long road ahead of you. You will get lots of support and information here.

Welcome to the forum Jesse! If you are customizing your Lincoln, you may want to move this project over to the custom area. Any custom ideas you post on here are vulnerable of getting slapped...I'm just saying! In my opinion, I think these cars look awesome shaved, my doors are shaved! If you do shave them, make sure you have a way to get in in case your battery dies and your windows are rolled up!

Re: The 1962 Lincoln Continental Project
I was very lucky to find these 2 cars for $1000. I am most definitely leaving the body work to the professionals. I will get to go help pull all the trim and strip the body for prep and then my guys will do all the rust repair and paint for me. Not only do I not have the time to do all that I also do not have the facility or skills needed to keep it straight and make it perfect. I am the one breaking down the engine and we have already sent it to the engine shop to be pressure tested and gone through. I should get back a working core i can start bolting everything back on to. So that part I am doing myself. Of course the interior will also be restored by a professional. When we get the engine back I'll look into those thermostats and see what's up with them. Just curious why would would not to replace them??ReijerLincoln wrote:Welcome Jesse. $1000 for two '62? I am changing the car to satin black. And like I replied to Reijer. I do not have the facilities or skills needed to do the body work or paint work. I am very lucky that the car we are restoring is as you said "razor straight" I am using the best of the 2 trunk lids. the other showed signs of rust and actually had a couple holes in it. It's probably restorable but needs work.Milsteads Garage wrote:Actually Reijer, why not recommend he paints the car himself?
