Continental Continental Kit?

Any Lincoln fact related question can be posted here. Questions such as how many Contintenal convertibles were produced in MY1965? How much was the Town Car option in 1969? What size of tire was standard on a 1953 Premiere? or Does the Mark II retractible prototype still exist?

Continental Continental Kit?

Post by kowolski »

Is this factory on this car?. I got this pic off a demo derby site. The car was for sale.
I will do a little research and get some more info if anybody is interested. Ad said that the car was located in Salinville Ohio

If this were my restauration project, that tail would be target of my very first assault.

I had a '56 Ford with a Continental kit... It was the first thing to go. There is ABSOLUTELY no way to make that "thing" look right on any car. Yet all the Skyliner folks jump at putting a dive platform on the rear of an otherwise good-looking car. It just looks tacked-on at best.

Generally, I would agree with you, but I think there are a few that are tastefully done.
I did a Google image search for "continental kit", and found some interesting ones.

I guess. The kit on my '56 was an addition to the rear bumper center and didn't have the dive platform (kind of like the T-birds of the same era.) I still think they just looked tacked-on... That's what makes the world go 'round!! If we all liked the same thing how boring would that be?

One that I thought was well done was the 1953 Ford "Coronado Deck". It was built-in to the trunk lid, so it didn't have that mess that's tacked on between the body and the bumper. I know the Indy 500 Pace Cars had them, but I couldn't find any pix that showed it. :smt102

If she was a boat (which I guess she is) then that would be a swim platform for sure.

If that car goes for demo derby (which I wish she won't) that swim platform might come in handy as a battering ram :D

All that aside, I have found a few 50's cars that I think look OK with a conty kit, but not too many.

I found a picture of it. Thanks for mentioning it, I hadn't seen it before.

I love Continental kits!

I agree that they shouldn't be used on certain vehicles, but the Chevys and Cadillacs of the 50's and the early 60's Impala's are simply gorgeous with a Conti-Kit.

I think one could pull one off on a early 60's Lincoln, but once the bodies started to get more squarer like in 65, I 'm not sure if one would still look as good. If somebody did decide to add a Conti kit to say a 61-63, I hope that it doesn't look too bulged out.

A nice flush appearance would do nicely.

I didn't at first glance, but then I noticed the vert top trim pieces all across the "vinyl/padded"?? top. That sealed the deal. The complete package looks bitchin to me, although a trunk alignment would make it perfect! :smt005  Must be another example of too much beer, and too much free time. :?

Watching Barrett-Jackson today reminded me I also like the look of the 55-56 Birds w/Continental kit. For me, I think those look better with one.
