Factory Tires 1964 Lincoln Continental Sedan??

Details such as correct colors, plating material, inspection marks, orientation, and even the number of wipes that should occur for a vacuum-powered windshield wiper system after pushing the "wash" button.

Factory Tires 1964 Lincoln Continental Sedan??

Post by Steve K »

Today, for the first time since acquiring my 64 8 years ago, I took the spare tire out of the trunk and took off the spare tire cover. I was heading for the tire shop for tire balancing and decided to see if I had a good spare tire. I was pleasantly surprised to find what I think was the factory installed spare. I would like to verify this but I don't know what brand of tires was put on these cars at the factory or exactly what width white wall was used. Clearly this tire has never been on the road and from the looks of the wheel, I doubt it's ever been out of the trunk before today. Please take a look at these pictures and give me your impression. Was this a factory spare tire or a new tire put on at the time the original set of tires may have been changed? The car has 38K miles on it and this is well documented by service records. So in my mind, it has probably had at least one set of new tires put on it by the original owner before I got it and put the radials on. When I got the car it was still wearing 9.15 bias ply tires but I don't remember the brand name or whitewall characteristics. I could not make out a date code and maybe they didn't even date code tires then???

Here are some pictures. What do you guys think?

Tire and wheel. No evidence a wheel cover was ever put on this wheel (they mark the paint of the wheel where the clips are). A lot of the marking of the wheel rim is dum dum and there is some rust where the base for the jack contacted the wheel for the hold down hook.

I'm pretty sure that's the original spare tire. Still got '64 'air' in it.

Tire date coding was mandated for the US in 1971.

Prior to that most manufacturer's had a date coding system. But is wasn't the same from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Tires typically has have a service life of 4 to 6 years. Beyond that they are questionable. The tire you have is likely older than that. So it is just a show piece and nothing more.

Yep, that's an OEM Good Year Power Cushion 915 X 15. My family had a brand new 64 Sedan and it was Power Cushion equipped. A very popular OEM tire at the time.

My 65 still has the original spare tire, also never used. It's exactly the same tire, Good Year Power Cushion.
The tire rubber is rather sticky to the touch and still has some of the blue protective stuff on the whitewall. I doubt the tire would be any good at all to be actually used as a spare unless it had to be used only for a very, very short distance at low, low speeds.
