Correct transmission fluid

Post by LC67Vert »

My transmission was rebuilt many years ago and about 5 years ago I had the car to Baker's Auto and I had them do a transmission fluid change. Since I have not had to top off the fluid in many yearsI have forgot which ATF to use. I am not sure if I should be putting in Ford Type F or Mercron/Dexron. I think I should use Type F. Which is the correct fluid for my '67 Lincoln?

Most modern rebuilds use Dexron.

Thanks Dan. The trans rebuild was done over 20 years ago, so I am not sure if it was refilled with Dexron or Type F after the rebuild.

Your best bet is to call Bakers and ask what they would have used for the fluid change.

Yes, that is what I plan to do. But I will have to wait until Monday when they are open.

Unfortunately, no one has ever demonstrated how to tell if a transmission has Dexron vs. Type F in it in order to add the matching fluid.

I KNOW my 6t6 tranny has dexron in it because I had it rebuild in 2006 and asked the shop, but I need to document it somewhere in case I forget or the next owner needs to know.

I talked to Steve at Baker's Auto and he told me that they used Type F (or the more modern equivalent, Type FA) when the transmission fluid was changed about 5 1/2 years ago. So, I topped the transmission off with about one or two pints of Type FA fluid and it is shifting nicely again.

I´m about to do a fluid change aswell but I´m having some problem converting to Liter. In my car shop manual from 1977 it says for the C6 transm: 12-1/4 Qts US measure and 10-1/4 Qts Imp. measure.
The unit converter I use http://www.digitaldutch.com/unitconverter/ I can choose Quarts dry US and Quarts liquid US. Anyone have any idea wich is correct?
