Why not buy good used from a parts car? Bound to be many out there available. Polish up the frame and replace the ribbing to make it like new.

The limiting factor with this car is the transmission. It is a warmed over version from the Taurus that was barely adequate to begin with. Very possibly normal behavior. The late 60s cars with ATC also chattered when they reached/around the set temperature. Not sure when the system was redesigned, but probably same basic system.

I have. It’s a pain in the ass. I put the deck lid all the way up and then went to work on the screws. Might be easier to get the center ones if you’re sitting in the trunk.

With as heavy as these cars are I can’t imagine one cheap shock absorber compared to the next would be very much different. Interesting. Don’t know that anyone has ever mentioned that location for VIN stamping. The well known one is just above the passenger upper control arm in the engine bay.
