Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
Mike, my '67 has no crosshatch, just some dots, it has a C6VE part no. at the bottom, does your '63 have a part no? My '62 had an incorrect and broken stick in it.

Hmm. Thanks, Fraser, I learned something new today.frasern wrote: ↑Sun Feb 25, 2024 7:31 pm My measurement was from inside the umbrella, at a point where the thing seats.
I once read in a racing engine book, that you can overfill an engine, within reason, without any problems. Specifically, one of the cobra jets, and I don't recall which, had it's factory dipstick calibrated for one quart more, without any other changes. Same pan, oil pickup, not even an added windage tray. Now, this was not a MEL, however.

I told you engines eat dip sticks. In this case though the brazing was probably an attempt to provide a dip stick where there was none. Wayne

Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
I didn't realise it was a recall, just that the CJ used the same block and pan as a lesser engine, but with a shorter dipstick. I think the engineers specified a level which they felt offered enough protection, but tried to keep service costs down.
Wayne, I understand the trans stick getting eaten, but who checks the engine oil while it's running?

I didn't see any numbers on it just a Ford logo. I'll look again when I check length of my other one.

Hi Fraser, the key word for us old folks is forgetfulness. You probably haven't slammed your hood and found your glasses in tiny bits and pieces on top of the air cleaner. Why do we think we see better without them? Wayne
Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
Thanks for all the comments and advice. So it's apparent my dipstick is not original, despite whether it is the correct length or not (I'm guessing not). So I'm on the hunt for an original one for my 62, if anybody has one or knows anybody that does.

The usual suspects will have one, but it will be pricy. It will also be correct compared to what you might find on Flea Bay. Asking here, though is a very good thing. Someone might have one. Wayne

Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
In the meantime, just mark where the level sits on your incorrect stick, with the 6 quarts you already put in, until you find a better one.

Sounds good. Thanks again.
Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
Both of my 1963 dipsticks look to be the same so I'm guessing they are correct. There's no number stamped on them.

Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
Thanks for the update Mike, if I can find my '62 dipstick, I will compare it to your picture. It may be original, just bent and battered. Probably moot, as I am probably going to put my spare 462 into that car.

Re: 1962 Engine Oil Dipstick
To close the loop from my original post, I ended up getting lucky and finding an original engine oil dipstick from a 62 Continental at a junk yard. Put it in my car and the oil reading is exactly at the full mark (6 quarts with a filter change). Problem solved

Good. I’ll consider that another vote for the 6 qt. camp.

Vote or no. I'm really glad you found a stick. Take good care of it. Love it as you love yourself. Wayne
