'68 steering wheel.
How do I remove the steering wheel pad on a '68 sedan? It looks like it should just pull off, but feels like it's going to break if I continue. Old plastic can be tricky.
It's just a parts car, but I still don't want to damage it.

Re: '68 steering wheel.
Is that a two spoke wheel with a pad?
If yes, the pad is held on with two smaller phillips screws. One on each spoke into the back side of the wheel.

I agree. Look behind the steering wheel; there have to be screws holding the pad in place. It doesn't just snap in there.

Re: '68 steering wheel.
Ford trucks, post '70, had the 2 screws from behind, so that's what I checked first but did not find any. I will look again.
The wheel is similar to the one shown, but not identical. it has a chrome, underslung ring similar to a '61, and cutouts for it to go through. I will see if I can get some pictures later today. It has a tilt column, so perhaps they differed from a non tilt column?

Re: '68 steering wheel.
My wheel is the same as the one pictured, the chrome horn ring attaches to the holes on the outside ears of the metal part, and protrudes through the holes in the back.
there are no screws from behind, what looks like holes in the picture, do not go through, just casting locaters. Two tiny screws are visible through the horn ring holes which I removed, but no other attachment can be seen. I tried twisting the pad, but still no luck.

See Parts catalog section 138 page 6 for an illustration of the steering wheel and horn assembly. It looks like the P/N 3062 must be removed and then the rest of the assembly can be serviced.

Re: '68 steering wheel.
Thank you, Tom. The illustration is a little different than mine, and shows screws through the spokes to hold the pad, and a different type of horn ring. The horn appears to be a push and twist design, so I will try again to push and twist my pad, I may have been too gentle before.
In '66, it pulled straight off, "67 was a twist off. Without screws to remove, it must be something similar. I am away from that yard for a few days, but will try again, later this week.

Re: '68 steering wheel.
Well, I figured it out, the plastic trim slides out from the face of the pad, and the screws are behind it. After a lot of years in there, it was really stuck, and felt like it was about to break, but once it freed up, it slid out easily.

Thank you Rick, I am well, hope you are also. The cowboys, however, are a bit restless right now.
