That timing cover would have to have the oil filler tube swapped out to be used with a 66 to 68 462. Ours is more curvy.

I'm not familiar with the 462 timing cover Got a pic? Now I'm curious.

Re: Electric Power Steering (And eliminating the crank PS Pu
I just found this drawing for a 58 Lincoln 430 and it shows it using a belt driven power steering pump. I thought they used the vane style crank driven pump. But I know vane was only used 1 year before going to the roller style we all know and love/hate. Maybe the very first 430s in 58 hasn't gone to the crank driven pump yet?
Re: Electric Power Steering (And eliminating the crank PS Pu
Debbie wants power steering on her Studebaker. I don't know yet if we will go with adding a conventional PS pump to the existing set-up or go with some kind of electric power steering. If we do go electric, I can post the results here if there's an interest.

What about the current draw? How much load does that electric setup place on the car's systems? I'd imagine it needing even more juice than it otherwise would need, requiring electric-system upgrades.
I'm asking just out of curiosity. I have to say that is a really cool upgrade--this thread belongs in the "Customizing" category to offset all the lame wagon-wheel and hopping-suspension posts.

Re: Electric Power Steering (And eliminating the crank PS Pu
There are electric PS pumps out there for racing cars, etc. (At least, I thought there were... I'm looking to see if there is an application for the 460.)
I'm not too keen on putting an even older Pump on my Lincoln just to eliminate the crank-driven pump. I'd rather see a bracket for a 70s-style pump since they are widely available and also supported hydro-boost, etc.
At least we have a cover and spacer option.

Could just grab the pump for the 59 bird, it bolts up to bosses that I assume are likely still on these blocks. Here's the mountDan Szwarc wrote:There are electric PS pumps out there for racing cars, etc.

And you can buy the pump new/reman from O'Reillys for $60: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detai ... /02869.oap
Then you just need the pulley for the pump and that goes into the balancer

The power feed for the pump is wired back to the battery and I upgrade the alternator 12 months ago as for current draw I am unsure of it.TonyC wrote:What about the current draw? Nice. As long as you haven't had any issues for a year, it looks like you made something work that others would have said couldn't be done.

I checked with the vendor for the crankshaft spacer, and they indicated that it will not work on our 430 engines.
Any other sources for this item?
Any part numbers for the pump and bracket?

Which vendors did you check with for the spacer? I got mine from one of the usual suspects

I followed the link on the first page for the part which was an ebay link.
That vendor, PDRMotorsports, said it would not fit.
If I can get it from one of the usual suspects, then that's what I'll do.
Thank you!

Didn't the '58 - '60 Lincolns & Continentals also use a belt-driven PS pump on the 430 in them?

Re: Electric Power Steering (And eliminating the crank PS Pu
The 2002-2008 Mini Cooper uses an electric pump. They are prone to failure due to their cooling fan going out, but I think in a car with space to properly cool the unit, it will be fine. I'm researching the possibility of using them in 60s era cars. What I like about them is they are on demand units. They sense pressure drops and pump based on demand saving energy and potentially not working the alternator as hard.
I may not go with the 430 for my car and if I remove the engine, the one I will go with will not have a provision for a power steering pump.
