New large case transmission cost

Post by Rollnlow »

Could someone tell me if the large case trans in a 65' are exspensive to rebuild? My clutch plates are shot, vacuum modulator rod needs to be replaced and converter needs to be replaced. I am told the parts for this particular case are exspensive. All comments are appreciated. :) .

Check either Kanter or Fatsco. Either way you are looking around $400 in parts not including the converter. If you want to make a trip to Az now or NM in a few months, I have a unit that I suspect works. The engine was seized but the transmission may be good.

It may be worth the effort, if Kanter or Fatsco offer the correct components. I think someone may have mentioned that they may be around outside the Usual Suspects. But beware--that transmission is as unique as you can find; it is not related to any of the C-series transmissions, and none of those parts can swap. If you have even the slightest doubt, go to the Usual Suspects, who have the correct PCA-series components.

I am putting my 1964 transmission back together now. its been close to 1,000.00 in parts, but that is new clutches, relined bands, rebuilt torque converter, rebuilt filter I also had to replace my output shaft ( lincoln parts international tore apart a pca just to sell me the output shaft  ) and a mudulator. I also spent 380.00 in an otc bushing driver for the job (awesome tool) and a piston compressor, but I will use those again

Although the case is different in the Lincolns, the basic transmission is same as the Fordomatic, Mercomatic, and Cruisomatic. My transmission guy refers my transmission as a "large case Cruisomatic". The internals are very much the same and not unique to Lincolns. The case however is totally different.

Aaahhh--so the internals are similar to the first-generation auto-trannies of the '50s! That is the first time I've gotten confirmation on the forum to that effect. Thank you, Todd!

'Course, still doesn't change the fact that 89% of transmission shops out there are clueless on how to deal with that generation. Well, be fair--84.9%.
