Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
Everybody likes pictures so I thought I would include mine.
If you look at the 4:00 position you can see the missing teeth, you can also see all the cracked ones.
Yep, had to drop the pan and get the teeth out.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
Someone should post a detailed link on where to buy a double roller chain set. Brand and part #'s. I cannot find any for the 430. I am sure there are plenty for the 460 though.

Double rollers for the 430 and 462 do not exist.
The below links are mostly dead.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
The large washer that goes on in front of the crank gear and before the timing cover - which way does the bevel face? I cannot find any reference to it in the shop manual. 1964 lincoln continental 430. I looked at the rub marks that would indicate rubbing and it seems the bevel faces back towards the engine. Anyone put this in wrong and have to tear it all down? The timing cover gasket, I installed from the outside. Any input would help. Seems the shop manual is vague on plenty of the tricky things like that and carb linkage...

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
That thing is there just to randomly sling oil around inside the timing cover to keep everything wet, so I doubt it matters very much, but mine is installed with the lip going in towards the engine.
EDIT: Post below indicates it can be eaten by the timing chain if installed backwards.

Facing inwards is correct. It gets eaten by the timing chain if facing outwards. I had to replace the one in my 462 because of that.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
Thought I would add my 65 sedan to the list for future owners wondering if they should check their timing gears. Here is what I found after 140,000 miles. All were cracked but still attached.

I believe the cloyes that Rockauto sells is a recommended part.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
I'm seriously thinking about going ahead and getting the timing gear and chain replaced on my '63 LCC. Sounds like a nylon time bomb. So I spoke to a friend of the previous owner he's fairly certain it wasn't ever replaced.
I've read years of posts and sounds like it would be a good time to do a few other things (high volume oil pump, power steering pump reseal kit, oil pan gasket, etc). For those that have been down this path before, is this a good parts list? What am I missing?
Timing chain & camshaft sprocket
Timing Chain cover gaskets & Front Main Seals
High Volume Oil Pump
Oil pan gasket
Power Steering pump reseal kit

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
You will need water pump gaskets, fuel pump gasket and oil filter adapter gasket if you plan to remove that in the process. I did this job on my ‘67 last winter and really cleaned things up. I also took off the heads and had new valve seals installed. Stripped and repainted everything. Really cleaned it up nice.

Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
I suggest that you take a good long hard look at your water pump before reinstalling. Now might be the ideal time for a rebuild. Wayne
Re: Photographic reminder to replace your timing set
Thanks LC- I checked with Lincoln Land and they have a timing gear cover gasket kit. I’m double-checking to make sure that kit has the additional gaskets you mentioned.LithiumCobalt wrote:You will need water pump gaskets, fuel pump gasket and oil filter adapter gasket if you plan to remove that in the process. I’m pretty handy and will read up on the job in the service manual. But I have not done this before, and if I try this myself, what are the things that are the most challenging?
