Anyone where to find or make up this trim?

Paint, sheet metal, hood ornaments, trim, vinyl tops, emblems, seats, carpet, dashboards, etc. Paint cleaning and detailing messages should be posted in the Cleaning and Detailing sub-forum.

Anyone where to find or make up this trim?

Post by John Mc »

Guys, my ‘77 glass top needs the aluminum trim (possibly stainless?) that surrounds the glass. Anyone know where to start to find an original? I’m guessing I’m going to have to have it made. Tips on where I might find a company to form it? Also look closely, it has a compound radius. 😳

You might take a look at the aluminum trims used on Model A's around the fabric roof insert. I didn't have to, but there are guys who can bend it into nice curves. It's approx. 5/8-3/4" wide

I would think it easier to straighten and polish the old one, than try to make a new one, how bad is your original?

I think, unreliably, that I sent my trim from my 63 to a fellow in Ma, to have straightened and polished years ago. It was the upside-down V trim, that I cannot think of the name. He was very reasonable and did not have the stuff for long. When it came back and was installed, I remembered that Charlie Blaise had sent me a set when he learned of my restoration project. The extra set has now fallen into that hole of spare parts that we all have and will be marveled at briefly by my heirs. Wayne

In the pic yours does not look too bad. I would think you could just polish it up unless there is something else we are not aware of. Aluminum and stainless polish up amazingly as you probably already know.

Stainless is relatively soft and is able to be straightened and polished. Anodized aluminum can’t be polished due to its extreme hardness. Sanding and grinding will work but is difficult. The anodizing can be stripped using lye, but you need to be careful not to damage the underlying aluminum.

That’s not my car, just showing an example of why I need.

Ahh, understood. Maybe try Chris at Lincoln Land or Kelly at Mercury Old Lincoln Parts. Kelly is liquidating parts and lot if getting thrown away so I would try to email them.... i've been told she is NOT answering the phone... but I would try Chris first at Lincoln Land.
