Re: Transmission oil please help
I usually do...I'm not sure it makes a difference. You should always check it when it is running, but if it is a half a quart down, stick a half a quart into it, running or not. The thing is you've got your rag, you've got the can of fluid, and you've put the dipstick on the ground. Why bother to shut it off? You know how much it needs, stick it in, and make sure you wipe that dipstick. Ask me why you put the dipstick on the ground and not "somewhere safe" in the engine compartment. Wayne

Indeed; on a car with a backwards hood it's easy and safe to rest the stick on the cowl panel or fender...but that isn't the case with a Mark VI.

There's several safe places under the hood of a Mark VI to put the dipstick. More so then on my backwards hood 63 even.
I'm always one to leave dipsticks under the hood. On the ground there's too much risk of getting stepped on or dirt kicked onto it etc.

I agree with Wayne to some degree, keep it away from the front. If it falls off the cowl, no big deal, but if it falls off the front, the stick really hits the fan!
