HELP: Horn not working on '74

Post by chuckie »

Hi,
My horn is not working on the '74 coupe I just bought, so if I have checked the fuses, what else should I check? This is the "rim-blow" type horn setup.

Thanks and PEACE! :smt006

Check the horn relay. And test the horns themselves.

Press the horn button and listen for a click. If you don't hear it, look where it's not coming from and the relay should be right there.

Dan, I press the rim and no click. Perhaps it is the relay wherever it is, the fuses look fine.

The '74 wiring diagram for Lincolns says: "R.H. SIDE OF BRAKE PEDAL SUPPORT"
The relay has 3 wires coming out of it.
Yellow with light Blue dashes=12V from fuse/circuit breaker #7 to pos. side of relay coil
Yellow with light Blue dashes=negative side of relay coil to horn switch
Dark Blue=12V to horns (when activated)

I don't have my Manuals here with me but I think that the horn relay on that car(if it has speed control)is located under the dash near the base of the steering column and near the speed control amplifier.

I would start directly with the horns themselves. If they blow when bench tested, then have someone push the horn button while holding a test light at the horns’s power lead. If no light, it’s either the switch or the relay. If it lights, the horn is dead.
