Work continues on The Shark. I've removed all the side windows and sent off the belt weatherstripping and window channels for restoration by a specialist. I've also done some welding repairs to the power window regulators, along with thorough cleaning and re-lubrication. I plan to get the windows back in as soon as the parts arrive.

I'm also working on the servo control for the heater and vent controls, trying to get that back into operating condition.

I've put a deposit in with Hale's Upholstery in Roberts, Montana and Gary, the owner, has started ordering material for interior restoration. He will be doing seats, carpet, rear deck shelf, headliner, door panels, sun visors and dashboard. Gary was able to locate the original cloth seat pattern from 1959, so we'll be using that and keeping the original stock appearance to the seats. Although this car's seats were originally cloth/vinyl, Gary will be using leather in the primary wear surfaces of the seats, and matching gray vinyl for sides and backs. It should be better than new when done.

I also installed an auxilary electric fuel pump near the gas tank, controlled by a toggle switch under the dash. This helps greatly in priming the carb after the car has been sitting for a while, thus greatly reducing wear on the starter. The mechanical pump easily pulls fuel through the electric pump when it's turned off.

The car will be up in Montana for a couple months, so I'll have time for other projects, one of which is a 1962 Willys 4WD pickup resto-mod.

The heat & ventilation controls in my 1959 Lincoln consist of a multi-position wafer switch on the instrument panel, a relay under the hood, and a motor-driven servo with eccentric cams and levers that operate cables going to various flaps and ducts as well as the valve that directs water to the heater cores. This system was inoperative, so I set about diagnosing and repairing it while the dash was apart. In the photo is the servo control (with cover off), situated under the dash.

This was a real chore to disassemble. Everything was carefully labelled with tags to facilitate reassembly.

One problem encountered was the relay, under the hood. I pulled it apart and cleaned burnt contacts. That did not solve the problem (inop. heat/vent controls), so I had to go further.

The wafer switch for heat/ventilation control is shown positioned near the servo. It took quite some time to test continuity on all these wires and clean all electrical contacts.

Unsure if all the time spent on the heat/ventilation system would restore function, I put it all back together, fired up the engine and was delighted to hear the soft whir of the servo motor spinning as flaps opened and closed. Heat & Vent system in perfect working condition now!

Here is the RH heat/ventilation duct, underneath the dash. When the front doors are closed, heat (or fresh air) passes through the front door armrests and exits towards the rear passenger compartment. This year Lincoln actually has (two) heater cores and fan/blowers, situated in the rear of the front fenders.

While I had my dash apart, I also pulled the two duct housings from under the dash and took them to Hale's Upholstery in Roberts, Montana. Gary Hale then recovered the housings with fresh vinyl.

Watching Gary work with obvious skill and expertise, I was glad to put this aspect of restoration in his able hands.

Tired and old on the left, freshly covered with new vinyl on the right. I then took the duct housings back to my shop to reinstall in the car, thus saving Gary the hassle of a difficult removal/reinstall process.

Thank goodness for parts cars! For some reason, the chrome on my 59 Lincoln door handles was pitted and damaged. But, I was able to pull much better handles from my two 58 parts cars.

I had the side windows, channels, belt weatherstripping and power window regulators out of the car. Belt weatherstripping and channels went to Restoration Specialties in Pennsylvania for restoration. I tackled numerous problems with the window regulators, primarily broken welds. Here you can see the original (silver) regulator from the car. It had obviously broken in half and be welded back together some time in the past. Pretty dodgy condition, so I replaced it with the (black) regulator from a 58 parts car. It seems the earlier black style is more substantial and of better construction than the later silver style. I also serviced all the door latch and lock mechanisms while accessible.

At present, The Shark is at Hale's Upholstery in Robert's Montana. Headliner and carpet are done. Work proceeds on seats and door panels. Original cloth was obtained from SMS and rather than use original cloth and naugahyde (as done in the factory) we'll be using cloth and gray leather.

Very nice job on your shark there.

Please upload another video showing the new upholstery the Hale did for you, I'd love to see the finished product.

Photos of completed interior:
The car is back from Hale's Upholstery in Roberts, Montana. I'm thrilled with the results and appreciative of Gary Hale's hard work and superb craftsmanship. We deviated from original in using leather instead of naugahyde. That's original NOS cloth, sourced from SMS Fabrics.

New headliner is nearly an exact match to original in appearance and texture.

Although my intent was to retain the original design and styling of the interior, we did deviate with what we considered improvements. With extra seat cloth material left over, Gary suggested using it (instead of gray vinyl) on the door panels above the armrests. In addition, we used gray leather (instead of vinyl) for the armrests and lower mid section of the door panels. IMO, we went from what would have been a very nice 'correct' restoration to something truly stunning.

Since we'd purchased three hides of gray leather, primarily for the seats, we had leftover leather to use on both door panels and in fabricating a new dash pad. Again, not correct to original, but the result is simply beautiful and 'better than new' in my opinion.

Here's how it looked before going to Gary's shop. I am so happy that I met Gary and had him do the interior restoration on the car. When I first watched him at work, I quickly realized that I had chosen the right man for the job. I could not imagine tackling an interior job like this on my own, lacking both experience and proper tools.
